The 2005 Match: Introduction
 |
The 75th Match took place on Saturday July 16, 2005. It was the 10th.
Anniversary Match of the current 4th. Series which began in 1995. The
fact that it took place was in large part due to the financial support
of the Match Patrons [see left], together with organisations and
individuals who provided services and expertise [see right]. The Match
Committee would like to place on record their appreciation and thanks to
these two groups of supporters. The 75th. Match could not have taken
place without them.

| SBA CHAMPIONSHIP
The
Thames Match is recognised by the Sailing Barge Association (SBA)
as a venue for barges to be awarded points based on their racing
performance. Their accumulation can, through competing in other
recognised matches lead to the award of SBA Champion Barge of the
Year at the end of the season in September.

awarded by the SBA based on the results of the 2005
Thames Match are provided above. The first figure is the points
credited from previous matches prior to entering the
Thames Match. |
Figures in
( ) represent the total points after the Thames Match. For example Lady Daphne had 2 points to her credit
before the Thames Match and 8 after competing in it. |
Further
information on the Champion Barge scheme and the SBA itself can
be found here. |
|
The Match started as usual
in Lower Hope Reach, just below Gravesend, Kent, on the Lower River Thames, between East
Tilbury Fort on the Essex shore and Cliffe Marshes on the Kent shore. It
finished, as usual, off Gravesend. Twelve barges competed in the Match, and an
additional one
- SB Thistle (1895) Capt. D. Copsey [Topsail Charters Ltd,
Maldon] was a non-competitor i.e.
a "follower" with spectators on board. The various prizes were
presented after the match that evening, by Dan Houston, Editor of the Classic Boat magazine. The exception
was the prize for the 1st. barge round the outer mark, which was specially
presented by Capt. J. Lawrence, a long time former sailorman. The results of the Match
in terms of the main prizes awarded to each competitor are recorded
below the item about the Officer of the Day. |
PLEASE SUPPORT THE
BARGES!
The majority of the
barges that race in the Thames Match each year spend the rest of their
time on charter work during the summer months - to earn their upkeep.
Chartering can range from day trips, to weekends, or even a week, usually
incorporating sightseeing afloat and shore visits. The barges need
your custom. So please consider exploring the various types of trips they
have to offer - for individuals or groups. |

A pictorial account of the
Match has been created. It is based largely on photos representing the
perspective of being on board a competing barge - the Lady Daphne [left].
These are complemented by
photos taken by Capt. Julian Cass, Commodore, and John Hargreaves [2005
Match Patron],
Timekeeper, who were both in the Match Committee vessel MV Touchstone. In
addition, Barry Lawrance who was on board SB Repertor [another
competing barge] and Heather Rooke who was on board MV Princess
Pocahontas have kindly contributed some of their photos in order to fill some gaps. The
pictorial account is provided in the
following pages:
Part 1 - The start and outward leg
Part 2 - Rounding the outer mark
Part 3 - The return leg and finish
|
| Mrs.
Elisabeth Mainelli [2005 Match Patron], owner
of the SB Lady Daphne (1923) kindly invited Mike Wignall
[Match Committee Webmaster] and his wife, who are both photographers, to experience the Match from
a competing barge. The Lady Daphne's unusual
topsail emblem which promotes the risk/reward management consultancy Z/Yen
Ltd. together with her striped
staysail, makes her easily recognisable at a distance, as a naturally
photogenic barge. |
The
Lady Daphne, which is based in Central London, is available for charter [which funds
her upkeep] by corporate
organisations, clubs, societies or individuals, through Nymph
Ltd. Contacts are:
