VIEWING THE MATCH FROM THE LAND From the Kent Shore – Viewing the start of the Match is possible from the Kent shore, from a number of locations ranging from Gravesend, through Cliffe and along the Hoo Peninsula. Some of the locations are close enough for the unaided eye, but others will need binoculars. Some of the locations are of interest in themselves as they have connections with both Charles Dickens Senior (1812-1870) and Charles Dickens Junior (1837-1896). Again some of the locations coincide with pubs, whilst others have them a short walk from the vantage points. From the Essex Shore – The barges taking part in the Match can likewise be viewed from various selected vantage points on the Essex shore, from East Tilbury, through Canvey on to Southend on Sea. Again some locations are good for the unaided eye - others will need binoculars. Some also have pubs and connections with the Dickens family! Page last edited: May 24, 2007 |
