Bibliography

Of the various books published on sailing barges, none are devoted exclusively to the history of the Thames Match. However, one does provide its story, together with that of the Medway Match, from the 19th. century up until 1962:

COOPER, F. S., Racing Sailormen (Percival Marshall & Co., 1963)

Three more contain chapters on its history:

BENHAM, Harvey, Down Top’sl ( Harrap, 1971)

CARR, Frank G. G., Sailing Barges (Terence Dalton Ltd., 1989)

MARCH, Edgar J., Spritsail Barges of the Thames and Medway (David & Charles, 1970)

Of the autobiographies, three have very interesting accounts of racing:

HORLOCK, A. H., (Chubb). Mistleyman’s Log (Fisher Nautical Press, 1977)

ROBERTS, Bob,  Last of the Sailormen (Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1973)

UGLOW, Jim, MBE, Sailormen (Conway Maritime Press, 1975)

As far as the modern day Match is concerned, the most comprehensive treatment, aimed specifically at spectators, is provided as the main feature article in:

WIGNALL, M. B., Thames Sailing Barge Yearbook 2005, (privately published, 2005)
