Changing course of the race...

The Thames Sailing Barge Match course was originally sailed from Erith [1], but from 1895 it has been sailed from Gravesend. Before the 2nd World War the outer mark was the Mouse Light Vessel and post war it was the North Oaze Buoy. In 1927 the start was moved down to the bottom of the Lower Hope. From 1995 to 2000 the Outer Mark has been the SW Barrow Buoy, however in 2001 the Committee decided to revert to the North Oaze Buoy.

An outline view of the course taken by the barges from the start in the Lower Hope out to the North Oaze buoy and back to Gravesend is provided below.
